Emma Frances Jones - her background

Emma Frances Jones was born November 7, 1856 in Braintree.

Her parents were Ella and George.

George was a Jones, George Henry Jones, b 1828, he died by drowning May 13, 1860, right before the 1860 census. We can find him in the 1850 census, living with his father Moses. Like so many Braintree people, Moses and George were bootmakers. He married Ella in 1853, and was recorded as a bootmaker in the 1855 Massachusetts state census. Ella was born in 1856. Her younger brother was born in 1859, originally named Edward Star Jones, he later went by George Edward Jones.

Emma would have been three and a half when her father died.

Ella Frances Humphrey's mother was Maria Bradley Greene. She was born around 1804, her last name was listed as either Humphrey (her married name) or Green / Greene (her birth name) in her children's marriage records. Her husband John Humphrey lived from 1798 to 1862. John was born in Weymouth, they married in Brockton. Ella Frances was their sixth child, their second daughter. The 1850 census shows them living in Braintree with their two daughters and their youngest son. They appear to be living next door to Maria's brother Benjamin, who is a mariner, and Maria and Benjamin's mother, Abigail. John Humphrey is a bootmaker. They were likely not too far from George Henry Jones family, who are listed two pages later in the Braintree census.

The 1860 census was about a month after George died. Newly widowed Ella and her two children, Emma and George, are living in a multifamily household with Ella's parents and possibly Ella's maternal grandmother. A few years later, Ella married Barker Cook (18 years older). It was the 2nd marriage for both of them. Emma Frances would have been about 7 1/2. The 1865 shows Barker's two youngest boys, Ella's two children, and Ella's mother, Maria Bradley Greene Humphrey. Maps of Braintree show that the Barker Cook family lived about a half mile from the Allen family.

If you notice the Allens just across the intersection from Barker Cook, this would be Richard Hall Allen. Next to RH Allen is W Allen who I believe is Wilder Alden (not Allen). On the 2nd map, you can see the three Allen families on Commercial Street. John Brooks and younger brother Abijah, their mother the widow Sarah Allen Allen is living in the 1777 Jacob Allen house with her daughter, Hephzibah Allen Hill (and Hephzibah's daughter Laura)
