The 3 Samuel Allens (1600s)

Really, this is an ongoing theme. I've been running across it since I first looked at my Braintree Allen roots.

There's some excellent information out there, where people have done the document work. Even for people whose families have been here for 400 years, there is really need to attach roots to the old country. And it is so easy to go, oh look, there is Samuel Allen and his parents Samuel Sr and Ann family name unknown. When it is the other Samuel.

Samuel, George Allen's son. Too young to be Samuel Allen of Braintree or Samuel Allen of Windsor. Both the older Samuel's had a son named Samuel. All three of these were born around the same time. Currently, there has been no documentation found showing George's son Samuel after he sold his portion of his land inheritance from George in 1656. More info here.

Samuel Allen of Windsor. Wife Ann, first known son Samuel. He was possibly born as early as 1588. Their son Samuel, b 1634 in Windsor and died 1718 in Northhampton. Samuel Sr died 1648, in Windsor. Widow Ann remarried Hurlburd / Hurlbut and moved to Northhampton around 1657. Ann Allen Hurlburd died 1687.

Samuel Allen of Braintree. Born around 1600, people list dates from 1597 to 1610. His marriage to Ann, maiden name unknown possibly Whitmore, is listed as 1628-1631, either in England or Braintree. Samuel and Ann's first son is listed as Samuel born 1628 to 1632 in England or Braintree. Ann died before 1650, likely 1641. Samuel died 1669 in Braintree. His will mentions son Samewell among others. In a 1672 document, Samuel is referred to as Samuel of Bridgewater in settlement of his inheritance by half brother Joseph and stepmother Margaret.

In short, there is no real difficulty. Two clear older generation Samuels. George had a son Samuel, but he was born in the 1630s. Samuel of Braintree was not George's son, but other info indicates that he was a close relative, perhaps a nephew or cousin. Samuel of Windsor and his son Samuel have consistent paper trails that are clearly different from the paper trails of Samuel & Samuel of Braintree. Everyone wants to be related to George because his name was written down on a passenger list. Everyone wants to be related to Windsor Samuel Allens because, Ethan Allen.
