Joseph Maier 1865-1916, Köngen to Boston

Joseph, brother to Johannes, uncle to Johan Wilhelm Maier / William John Maier

Born  1865 Jul 15. Köngen, Wurttemberg, Germany
His parents were Johannes Maier and Eva Margaretha Maier Maier (her parents: Joseph Maier and Eva Deuschle)
He was baptized 1865 July 16 in the Lutheran church in Köngen. Population of the town was 2088 in 1871

When did he immigrate?
According to his naturalization petition, he immigrated 1882 Aug 11, New York and spent time in New York and Vermont, before living in Massachusetts. In another statement, he immigrated with his parents however his father Johannes died in 1874. Did Eva Margaretha remarry? The 1900 census shows his immigration year as 1885, which does not match his 1887 citizenship. 1910 census shows him immigrating in 1882, he would have been 17.

He became a US citizen 1887 Dec 27
According to his naturalization papers, he was living at 346 Harrison Ave and he describes himself as a bookkeeper. His witnesses who have known him for 5 years were Wm & JJ Marlow of Brockton. Wonder who they were?

He registered to vote the next year: 1888 Sept 28
From his voter registration, he was living at 35 Essex St (ward 10, precinct 3, letter N, page 313, year 1888) He is from "Wirtemberg" Germany. No longer a bookkeeper, he is now a bartender, with his work address is "Essex St", so perhaps 35 Essex St, did he live over or behind the bar? The form also lists date and court he was naturalized.
(tidbit, the fellow before him on the list registered to vote on the same day he was granted citizenship

In 1889, on August 25th, he married Christina Herman in Cambridge. He is now a clerk.
On the marriage form, his parents are listed as Johannes and Eva, her parents are listed as George and Rosine.

1890 census burned in the basement in DC, but his first son was born in 1890 on June 26th and named Joseph George. The family has moved again, living at 208 W Seventh, the building is still standing. The family lived there for at least the next two years, when Herman John was born on the 6th of August, 1891. William David born less than two years later on the 15th of December, 1892. Joseph was listed as a bartender all three years.

Christina had a break, the 4th son, Frederick Charles, not born until 1898, March 1st. Now living at 107 Pleasant st, Joseph is listed as a clerk. Current information claims that it was built in 1990. It is in a classic Dorchester triple-decker neighborhood, and was either built to match the neighborhood or heavily remodeled.

In the 1900 census, they family has moved again. The census lists their address as 171 Samartine St. I'm not sure what happened, but the name on modern maps is Lamartine St. The current house was built in 1997 when the new greenway was built, a one family replacing the older multifamily house that was there when the Maiers lived in it. The whole family can read, write, and speak English. Except for toddler Frederick/Fritz. I cannot easily decipher what Joseph says he work is - it looks like "jauntor".

Otto Henry, the fifth and last child, was born three years after his brother Frederick, one year after the census, on the 14th June, 1901. The family has moved again, now living a few houses away at 194 Samartine St (no longer standing). Joseph is listed as a saloon keeper

The Boston newspapers tell us that in 1903, Joseph and Thomas Coffey dissolved their business partnership, leaving Joseph with the business and any debts.

February 1910, 2nd son Hermann elopes to marries Pauline Emma Hunter in Nashua NH. In their marriage record, Joseph is described as a merchant.

1910 census, the Maiers are living on Clive St, Herman is living with his in-laws. Joseph Jr is no longer living with the family. Joseph Sr. is described as a liquor dealer who owns his own business. Christina has born 5 children, all living.

He died suddenly in 1916. His death was reported by his middle son, William David. The family was living at 41 Clive St, listed as a liquor dealer. He was buried May 3 at Forest Hills, the account in the Boston Globe shows how many groups Joseph Maier was involved with.
